How Do We Properly Staff Up For The Holidays?




What do I want to change, fix, or improve? What’s the expected/desired outcome?

Holiday help is great, unless you over staff, slash hours and let 70% of the staff go a full month earlier than expected!  How could temp hires be treated more fairly during their employment?  

What do I know about this? How should I proceed?

HR hired 63 temporary staff members independently in early October without consulting store manager.  In the future, HR should speak with store manager and discuss hiring projections.

  • HR and Management talk to determine traffic increase for holiday season
  • HR and Management agree on the number of temp workers needed to meet demand
  • HR hires for the positions and does not speak in absolutes about number of hours or final date of employment

How do I know if it is done right?

Store is staffed appropriately through holiday rush and temp workers released at projected time.
