How Do I Handle A Double Discount Dilemma?


What do I want to change, fix, or improve? What’s the expected/desired outcome?

Customer wants to use a coupon on a sale item and can’t understand why the salesperson won’t “double dip” on the purchase.  The salesperson is firm and says the customer can’t have it both ways. The upset customer abandons their cart and leaves.  How can the salesperson better communicate the store policy on double discounts?

What do I know about this? How should I proceed?

Double discounts are not honored by the store.  The salesperson should explain this, help the customer determine the best discount available and proceed with the sale.

  • Verify product is on sale
  • Verify customer’s coupon is valid
  • Explain that the store will only honor the sale price or the coupon
  • Provide the customer with the best discount

How do I know if it is done right?

Customers will receive best discount for their product within company policy.  Sales reports will not show double discounted item transactions.
